Cycling Tips from our Team

Whether you're cycling just for fun, to keep in shape, for transportation or are a serious racer, knowing the fundamentals is mighty important. The more you know, the greter your chances for really enjoyable, trouble-free riding. Good basic knowledege of cycling fundamentals, combined with regular practice (and, naturaylly, the right equipment) combine to make you a winner- whether you ride in your neighborhood, around town, or on hot BMX tracks.

1982 schwinn 29

Members of Team Schwinn, the Schwinn Corporation's racing team, are devoted to fundamentals. The most important ones have been set down here by team members to help you get the most out of your new Schwinn bicycle.

Pedaling

Pedaling should be a smooth, easy, circular motion - not up and down. Power should be applied through the entire stroke, and the ball of the foot should be centered over the pedal splindle. Toe clips and straps, available from your local Schwinn Dealer, greatly improve your ability to maintain a smooth, even cadence with power through the entire stroke. These relatively inexpensive accessories are often the first thing purchased by someone interested in serious cycling.

Gearing

Gearing is very important in keeping pedal cadence as smooth as possible. Spinning-top competitors rarely dip below 90 plus rotations per minute- is the most efficient and least fatiguing way to pedal. A cadence this fast may seem uncomfortable at first, but stick with it. Your improved performance will be worth the effort. If you find yourself spinning too fast with Little or no resistance against the pedals, or you are breathing too hard or can't remain firmly seated on the saddle, shift to a higher gear. On the other hand, if you can't keep a smooth, even cadence or your knees begin to hurt, you might like to try a lower gear.

Riding Position

You should be loose and comfortable the bike. The handlebars should be within comfortable reach and the saddle should be positioned so that there is only a slight bend in your knee when the pedal is in the lowest position. Experiment with different hand positions on the bars. A commonly used grip is acquired by placing your thumb over the top of the brake lever with your hand to the outside. In this position you can easily reach the brake levers, and steering is easiest from the outside of the bars. On long rides, however, it is advisable to change your hand position frequently to avoid fatigue.

Cornering

Quickly is not as easy as it may seem. It does require some practice to make sure, positive turns with a little loss of momentum as possible. Pick your line through the turn before you enter it and sick to it once you are committed. This is particularly important if you are riding with several others in a close formation. Lean the bicycle into the turn with your outside leg in the lowest pedal position to keep from hitting your inside pedal on the pavement. Also, shift your weight to the outside pedal to lower your center of gravity. This position will be the most stable suring the turn. If is necessary to slow down, as it often is, brake before entering the turn. This method ensures smooth turns.

Riding the Rought Spots

Bumpy roads and loose gravel create problems for bicycle. By getting up off the saddle, you can distribute your weight more evenly ove both wheels and make the bike more stable in rougher road conditions.

Braking

Bicycle brakes are designed to provide quick, fade-resistant stops. It is best to learn to anticipate stops to avoid panic situations, however. Get into the habit of watching traffic and road conditions around you. That way most of your braking situations will be easy braking situations.

In wet conditions, stoping, distances are increased dramatically, so your speed must be adjusted accordingly. Apply your brakes lighty and frequently. This prevents water from building up under the pads and possibly making your bicycle difficult to stop.

Also, lightweight high pressure bicycle tires have a tendency to be particularly slippery in wet weather. If you must ride in the rain, please use the greatest degree of caution and common sense. In long downhills, brakes will heat up if applied continuously. Therefore, it is a good idea to pump them slightly rather than apply a continual drag. This will keep them cool and help keep your bike under control.

Above all, enjoy your Schwinn bike. Cycling is a fantastic sport. We hope you enjoy it is much as we at Team Schwinn do. Good Cycling!

Things you should know about cyling

Your Schwinn bicycle deserves periodic checkup. Two or three times a season is usually adequate, depending on how often and how hard you ride your bike. Begin by rubbing your bike down with a damp cloth and then examining nine key areas for any problems or sign of wear:

Safety Check List

(1) tires
(2) wheels
(3) brakes
(4) handlebars and stem
(5) headset bearings
(6) pedals and cranks
(7) gears
(8) saddle
(9) reflectors and lights.

Also inspect your bike quickly every time you ride to make sure everything is in place, particularly if you have quick-release hubs.

1982 schwinn 31 of 1

Cyclists who care follow these simple rules:

- never pedal blackwards.
- never sit on your bike the kickstand down.
- avoid backing up your whenever possible.
- avoid potholes or uneven driveway curbs.
- keep your tires at full pressure.

Riding in Traffic

Know and follow these simple rules:
- understand the operation of your bike thoroughly before attempting to ride in congested areas. Practice on quiet streets and read your Schwinn Owner's Manual.
- get used to being able to look over your left shoulder to check traffic conditions. Mirrors which fasten to your bicycle or eyeglasses are available from your local Schwinn Dealer.

- select a route that avoids major highways.
- make sure parked cars are not going to open doors or move suddenly as you approach them.
- learn to anticipate traffic conditions and stay clear of any cars acting eratically.
- ride on the right side of the street, with traffic. If it is necessary to go onto a sidewalk, walk your bike.
- obey all traffic lights and other signals. Bicycle traffic is subject to all rules and regulations governing automobile traffic.
- always use hand signals to announce your intentions. (see illustrations)
- watch for potholes, storm drains, glass and other road hazards that can cause trouble.
- watch for inattentive drivers who may not be aware of you. If necessary, signal with a horn or whistle.
- wear a helmet and gloves. They offer an extra measure of protection.
- in wet weather, stoping distances are increased and high-pressure tires can become very slippery. In general, and particularyly in wet weather, it's basic to keep your head up, speeds down and anticipate your stops.

Good Sense Commuting Tips

- if you don't own bike, describe the terrain and distance between destinations to your Schwinn Dealer. He'll help you choose the model that's right for your particular commute.
- have equipment on your bike to hold packages.
- arrange for a secure parking space, preferably indoors and out of sight.
- dress comfortably, but avoid loose clothing and carry protective clothing in case of bad weather.

When Riding at Night...

- obey local laws pertaining to nighttime riding and required equipment.
- wear light-colored clothing for high visibility.
- be sure your reflectors are clean, properly positioned and firmly attached.
- make certain your lights work properly. Your Schwinn Dealer has a wide range of battery or generator lights.

Federal Government estimates 2,500,000 Americans will commute by bicycle in 1985 (and save 77,000 barrels of oil a day.) It's safer when you use the right bike, wear proper riding gear and follow the correct traffic rules.

Several years ago, California cyclists adapted the word "cruiser" to their world of sandy beaches, and enjoyed riding old balloon-tired bikes along the ocean's edge.

The name "Schwinn" in front of the title "Cruiser" has traditionally meant solid, comfortable riding, a cantilvered frame a top balloon tires and an overall look that never goes out of style. This year Schwinn offers a wide choice of Cruiser speeds, sizes and colors. You can enjoy cruising with or without a beach in your neighborhood. A Schwinn Cruiser is a ticket to fun- around town, at school, in street and sand.

    How To Win at BMX

    The Basics

The first and most important element in becoming true BMX competitor is to decide that you really want to race. It takes a lot of hard work to become a good racer. If you are not dedicated trophies will be few and far between. You must be in excellent physical condition, eat the properfoods, get plenty of rest and ride your bicycle as often and ride your bicycle as often and for as long as it takes to get your times down to competitive numbers.

Many racers find it's a help to set aside a certain portion of the day to work out on their bikes. It's most important to keep a strict training schedule. One of the best times is between school and dinner. If you have a track close by and you can use it, super! Do it. If not, you can still train seriously in vacant lots or other safe places.

Practive everyday. Winners say, "If I miss one day of practive, I notive it. If i miss two days, my competitors notice." Daily practive is almost a religion for most serious athletes. It won't guarantee success, but it sure helps.

Keep track of your improvement. If you can ride the same course every day, mark your times and try to improve on them every day. Many top riders also keep a log of their training. They find it every useful to record how long they practiced, notable events of the day and, is they didn't ride, why they didn't.

    The importance of "starts":

When you're practicing, organize the amount of time that you have available. Don't simply "ride." Most top competitors will spend as much as 25 percent of their practice time doing nothing but starts. This is the most important element in BMX racing and can be practiced in an area as small as a driveway. The rest of your training time should be spent practicing what you are having problems with, such as accelerating out turns, keeping your speed up in long straightaways, and just getting in the basic time on the bike.

When you are actually at the gate, concentrate on on thing: beign the first away from the line. The "hole shot" is the greatest possible advantage you can have in the race. You want to be the first one into the first turn. If you miss the "hole shot", you'll have to go aroung people to get into position to place or win. Repositioning yourself during the race is not easy.

How to get the "hole shot":

To get the "hole shot," you need to do two things. First, you have to be able to accelerate your bicycle daster than everyone else on the line. The pros find that a two-pedal start (with both feet on the pedals before the gate drops) is a must for a quick start. You can practice this by balancing on your bike using a wall as a starting gate to run your front wheel up against. Your strongest leg should be in the "up" pedal position.

Second, learn to anticipate the gate drop. If it is a manual gate, listen closely to the starter. Typically, he will have a particular cadence to his voice and will drop the gate at the same time for every moto. By listening closely, you can estimate when the gate will drop and can be the first one out.

    The Obstacle

A typical track has both jumps and turns. However every jump and turn is different. Ride the course before the race and decide exactly how you're going to handle each obstacle.
With jumps, you want stay as low to the ground as possible. Shift your weight over the back wheel to help maintain your balance. If you do get into the air, keep your body relaxed to absorb the shock of landing so that you lose as little momentum as possible.

You can either take turns high or low. In taking then low, you will need to slow down because turns are always tighter on the inside. The advantage of taking then low is that you don't need to ride as far. The outside is always faster but you need to ride farther, which may hurt your time.

    Strategy in the corner:

There is no one "best" way to take a turn. Your particular line through the turn has to be a snap decision you make during a race. You have to size up riders in front of you and in back of you, what lines they are taking, and set up your turn to either move ahead of them or make sure they stay behing. Going high will sometimes be better, but other times you'll have to stay low. The more racing experience you have, the better you'll handle the turns. Work hard on this - races are usually won or lost in the "corners".

    The Finish

Only on rider can be the winner. If you're lucky enough to be that guy, congratulations. Chances are, however, that you'll be finishing behind several others. It is never disgrace to lose when you try your hardest. If you lose because the other guy is in better shape or knows the track and his machine better, you'll know what you have to do to make the next race closer. Don't get down on yourself if you don't win consistently- get your practice time down. It's always more fun to be a good competitor than a sore loser. It another rider pulls off a beautiful move, congratulate him. He's working as hard as you are. And, if you should win, share it!

    The Rewards

For the dedicated competitor, BMX offers a multi-runged ladder of opportunity for growth. Unlike team sports, BMX practice time fits your schedule, instead of vice versa. You decide how much you want to go for it. Best of all, the reward, recognition and satisfaction for outstanding effort are completely personal. Once you've paid your dues is sweat and gained the skill to win in BMX racing, the glory is yours alone.

Anyone using Schwinn Bicycles is competitive events or in bicycle motocross dirt biking or similar activities assumes the risk of any resulting personal injury, damage or failure of the bicycle.

    A word about quality

A product, like an individual, has character. It can be good, bad, indifferent, or, perhaps too often, nondescript. The character of a product reflects thae character of its makes and the organization behind it.
You can judge the honesty and integrity of an organization by the degree to which it recognized its responsibility to the consumer. Part of this is willingness to put reputation on the line by replacing defective products or parts which, even with the most care and vigilance, occur in production from time to time.

Schwinn Bicycle Company has always stood squarely behind its product and for nearly 90 years has maintained a policy of repairing or replacing any part of its manufacture which proved defective either in material or workmanship. The Compnay has never set a time limit upon this self-imposed obligation. Parts which prove defective are reapired or replaced- regardless of the length of time they have been in service.

The words above were written more than 80 years ago by founder Ignaz Schwinn. Many manufacturers sell bikes. Schwinn selss a complete system that is deeply rooted in the character of the organization.

There is no charge- except for dealer labor after 30 days, or after a year in case of defective frame. The only products with a time-limit warranty are ergoMetric exercisers.

How to make sure your bicycle fits

Take the one or two minutes necessary to get proper fit and adjustment on your bike. It's the most important thing for bicycle safety and comfort. Your authorized independent Schwinn Dealer will be happy to help you with this. If you want to do it yourself, just follow this simple procedure.

    Frame Size

One easy way to select your size men's frame is to take off your shoes and stand astride the top tube of the bike with your feet flat on the ground. If the bar more than grazes your croth, the frame is too big. Women can also be use a men's frame to determine the approximate size of the corresponding ladies model. Another way to size a men's or ladie's frame is to measure your crotch to the ground and subtract ten inches. Or, for approximate fit of 26" and 27" Lightweight models, plu Juvenile, Young Adult and BMX models, you can use the chart on this page.

If you are undecided between two frame sizes, it's usually the best to choose the slightly smaller frame. Schwinn offers a variety of frame sizes in most models, so you can choose the right one for you.

    Saddle Height

Saddle adjustment should be based on your height. If the saddle is correctly positioned when you sit on it with your "down" leg almost fully extended, the heel should contact the "down" pedal comfortably. The saddle angle should be leverl or slightly upward with the nose higher than the rear. Before you decide to move the saddle forward or back, ride a few miles to get the "feel" of your bike.

    Handlebar Height

The bes handlebar height is generally slightly below the saddle. A mazimum height marking appears on both seat post and handlebar stem of all Schwinn bikes. The Schwinn Owner's Operating and maintenance manual as offers detailed instruction on proper bicycle fit.
