Schwinn-Built X-tra Lite lug frames for LeTour models are made of 18 gauge 1020 carbon steel tubing which has retained its original temper, stiffness and resilliency because it has been torch brazed and therefore has been heated and water quenched only where the tubes are brazed into the lugs.

Many mass-produced bicycle frames are heated in ovens or salt solutions in thier entirely, tubing and all, to over 1700 degrees fahrenheit in order to melt the brazing material in the joints, thus annealing the tubing and chaging its temper and resillency.

Even if these annealed frames are quenced after heating, the integrity of the original tubing has been lost and variations in resiliency will result in lack of consistency in the riding characteristics of the finished bicycles. Torch brazing permits better quality control for better riding performance.

These finest of all Schwinn X-tra Lite bicycles, the family of Schwinn Paramounts, are offered in a variety of styles to meet every need- from track or road racing models, including tandems, to touring and recreation models for the most discriminating of cyclists.

Hand-built of Reynolds 531 double butted and taper gauge manganese alloy steel tubing for minimum weight, Paramount lug frames are silver soldered at low temperatures to preserve original temper and resiliency of tubing to assure top performance. Available in a wide range of standard frame sizes. Paramounts also can be ordered in made-to-measure sizes at extra cost. All Schwinn X-tra Lite Frames are Torced Brazed

All Paramount frames are torch brazed by hand, using silver solder at about 1400 degrees fahrenheit. Schwinn Le Tour frames are all torch brazed using brass at about 1800 degrees fahrenheit. All Schwinn X-tra Lite frames are heated by torch only where the tubes and lugs are joined- not the entire frame,s tubes and all, as in furance or in vat "Batch Brazing" operations commonly used by other manufacturers.

Schwinn Paramount frames are torch brazed by hand, using silver solder at approximately 1400 degrees fahrenhiet.
Schwinn LeTour rear stays are torch brazed by hand, using brass, at approximately 1800 degrees fahrenhiet.

Schwinn Deluxe Touring Paramount

Bicycle Motocross Racing Great fun, Great Thrills!

Sound exciting? It is! It's happening all over America, week after week, at sactioned tracks, independent BMX layouts, local back yards and now in inside sports arenas.

BMx started on the trails on Southers California when sportsminded riders took their Schwinn Sting-Rays bikes... stripped them down.. and went off-the-road to find curves, hills, bumps, and woodsy trails.

As the sport grew, tracks were built simulating the rough and ready ups and downs encountered in trail riding- and a few more. All it took was a vacant area and a little grading work to create the humps and bumps, the dips, the berms and turns of a good competition track. BMX was born and soon races were beign run every weekend.

Today, BMX tracks are flourishing all over the United States. Races are sponsored by parent's groups, civic organization, bicycle dealers and leading manufactures.

BMX Teams, both exhibition and competition, are sponsored by many leading companies. Team Schwinn, during the summer of 1978, held a triumphant series of BMX races in leading cities from coast-to-coast. A similar tour will be held in 1979.

The first step towards proper bicycle fit is selection of the proper frame. Schwinn bicycles come in a wide variety of sizes and most Schwinn lightweights are available with different frame sizes to ensure that the purchaser is able to buy a bicycle with a frame which is neither too large nor too small but just right.

A rider's proper frame size is usually the largest frame which he can comfortably straddle with both of his feet on the ground as in the illustration on left. Women can use the diamond style frame to determine the approximate size of the corresponding ladies' model bicycle. Proper bicyle fit is necessary for the utmost in safety and handling.

Once the proper frame size has been determined, the next step is to adjust the seat to its correct height. The most efficient and comfortable pedaling is accomplished when the rider's leg, while he is seated on bicycle, is not quite fully extended when the ball of the foot is on the pedal. The rider must be seated on the saddle and the pedal MUST be at the bottom position as shown in illustration on the right.

The handlebar stem should be adjusted to the same height as seat or slightly lower than the seat, as shown in the illustrations.

Note: On Schwinn bikes a maximum height marking appears both on the seatpost and handlebar stem.

The Schwinn ergoMetric Exerciser is a stationary bicycle ergometer which permits a closely controlled, measured and repeatable cycling program.

When pedaling, with the resistance control at a specific setting, of which there are 11, energy expenditure remains relatively constant over a wide range of pedal speeds. (50-90 rpm's.) Thus, both the program and the rider's reaction to the program can be charted. A program chart is part of the console unit which can be used to record the length of time riding, the resistance load, and rpm's.

Schwinn and Schwinn-Approved bicycles, parts and accessories (Except the ergoMetric Exerciser) are warranted to be free from defects in materials and workmanship... no time limit.

Notice:

The user assumes the risk of any personal injuries, damage to or failure of the bicycle and any other losses if Schwinn bicycles are used in any competitive event, including bicycle racing, or in bicycle motorcross, dirt biking or similar activities, or training for such competitive events or activities.

DO NOT USE Schwinn bicycles for stunt riding, ramp, jumping, acrobatics or similar activities, or with motors as power driven vehicles. This Warranty does not cover any personal injuries, damage to or failure of the bicycle or any other losses due to accident, misuse, neglect, abuse, normal wear, improper assembly or improper maintenance.

Free 30-Day Checkup

Each Schwinn Bicycle will be fully assembled by the Authorized Schwinn Dealer at time of purchase, and will be entitled to recieve a free 30-day Checkup by the same Authorized Schwinn Dealer within the first 30 days of operation...such checkup to include free replacement of any parts and accessories found to be defective and free inspection and adjustment of all functional parts and assemblies... but not including any repair due to accident, improper use, neglect, abuse, normal wear, improper assembly or improper maintenance.

As its option, Schwinn will... without charge... either provide a replacement of or repair any Schwinn or Schwinn-Approved part of accessory which is defective under the terms of this warranty.

Dealer labor charges in installing replacement parts or accessories are not covered by this warranty after the Free 30-day checkup, except for any labor charges due to replacement of a defective frame within one year of original purchase at retail.

Repair or replacement of defective parts or accessories and those dealer charges specifies above shall be the sole remedy under this warranty, and In, No Event shall Schwinn be liable for incidental or consequential damages. Some States do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incedental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. See your Authorized Schwinn Dealer for service or replacement under the Schwinn Limited Warranty or write for assistance to the factory:
